ART RESIDENCES

Tada

TADA! Here We Are! Our Kindergarten and 1st grade classes have had the pleasure of participating in a Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! musical theater in-school residency with TADA! Youth Theater. During this musical theater mini-series, students were introduced to new musical theater skills, learned vocals and choreography to a song from a popular Broadway musical, and played fun theater games with new friends!

Artist year

ArtistYear — an organization born out of the traditions of service, dedication to artistic excellence, and respect, obligation, and empathy towards our fellow citizens—is the first National AmeriCorps program for artists to dedicate a year of service to our nation. ArtistYear’s mission is to address the Arts Education Gap by ensuring that every undeserved student in America has arts education through a National Service Arts Corps. We do so by developing, supporting and placing exceptional Fellows – recent higher-education arts graduates across all disciplines (including actors, creative writers, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, visual artists) – as full-time teaching artists at low-income schools. This innovative strategy serves not only to significantly bolster arts education for undeserved youth, with all its attendant benefits, it also enhances the capacity of schools, benefits the larger community, and underscores the importance of service for the next generation of artists and arts educators.

About Musical Connections:

Musical Connections: The School Partnership Program (MC) is an in-school music composition residency, through which students in New York City public schools learn the elements of music, increase their skills as active listeners, and compose their own music to be performed by professional musicians. To strengthen the connection between their in-class composition work and live music in the concert hall, students attend Little Orchestra Society weekday dress rehearsals and weekend performances. The interactive process of composing helps students develop a new vocabulary to express their own ideas and feelings, and also become better communicators, collaborators, and creative thinkers.

Teachers & Writers

Teachers & Writers Collaborative has had a residency here at PS 122 for over ten years.  Thanks to a grant, we get to experience this wonderful program completely free! The sixth graders in our Gifted & Talented program have the opportunity to work with these teaching artists for 20 sessions.  Initially, the focus was solely on poetry; however, over time we have made some changes to include different areas of creative writing.  Throughout the program, our students engage in writing warm ups, icebreakers, performing their pieces, and are immersed in a variety of writing styles.  Each session focuses on a new topic (we have covered spoken word, odes, blues poetry, word play, personal essays etc.)  At the conclusion of the program, each student receives an anthology showcasing all the work they have completed.  We have a celebration when distributing their published work and reflect on how the program has enriched our lives.  This publishing party is a source of pride and accomplishment for our children!

Teachers & Writers Collaborative Mission Statement: Teachers & Writers Collaborative (T&W) partners with New York City schools and community-based organizations, to offer dynamic creative writing programs led by professional writers. Our programs inspire the imagination and foster self-expression, communication, and life-long love of literature.

LCT

The eighth graders will be taking part in the Shakespeare Residency that is being offered by Lincoln Center. The Shakespeare program will help the eighth graders understand Shakespeare's language and it will get them ready for an in school performance.

The students went to Lincoln Center and they took part in various workshops that were led by the teaching artists. The students were shown various skills  and techniques that they will be able to use in their own performance The Tempest.

The teaching artist will be coming to visit each class ten times to help students break down Shakespeare's language and to teach them the theater skills that will be useful to them as they prepare for their own production.
