Basketball

The Physical Education Department at PS 122Q

The beginning of March usually signifies the crux of many basketball seasons for schools across the country including those at the high school and college level, but one Kindergarten through eighth grade school in Queens, New York, is already lighting up the scoreboard. At P.S. 122Q in Astoria, numerous fifth grade students have been taking part in a pilot program within District 30 of the Department of Education that has created inter-school competition during the school day. Also participating in matchups with the Mamie Fay K-8 school are P.S 84 and P.S. 85. There have been three competition days spread over the course of three months that the Owls from P.S. 122Q competed in, finishing with an undefeated record of 4-0.

The pilot program was initiated by the office of Community Superintendent of District 30, Dr. Philip A. Composto. There are other schools within District 30 competing in miniature divisions that individual schools have organized with the help of liaison and Physical Education Instruction Lead for District 30, Jesse Sanchez.

For P.S. 122Q students, the new experience gave them a chance to step out of the classroom and onto the court in a different context from physical education class – as part of a team. Referees, scoreboards, team benches, and even cheerleaders were all par for the course in the friendly but competitive contests between schools. Future steps include the organization of a soccer program with a similar structure and the hope is to continue the program beyond the 2023 school year. P.S. 122Q Physical Education Teacher and Coach of the fifth-grade team, Jennifer Kalar, noted, “The basketball program has elevated school spirit amongst students and faculty alike, whether or not there is a personal interest in the sport of basketball. There was no greater feeling than walking students who played in the game into their lunch period afterwards and hearing their peers cheer them on.”

SEPTEBER 2022

It is our goal to help each student develop their full potential both physically, socially and mentally. We strive to teach and introduce as many possible ways for our students to stay fit and to live a happy and healthy life. From building the foundation of skills and games to participating in competitive sports if one chooses. Students learn the importance of cooperation, sportsmanship and teamwork. These skills will follow each and every student throughout their life.

Next the students developed their locomotor skills through various games and activities.  In November an entire fitness unit was introduced and implemented, height and weight was taken.  December and most of January focused on eye-hand and eye-foot coordination.  This allowed the students to learn some basketball, baseball, and soccer drills and skills.  Currently the students are learning team building activities. In addition, the students learn a muscle or bone of the week, location and function.
