ATTENDANCE

It is extremely important that students attend school daily. Absences, regardless of the reason, result in loss of instructional time. Please note that one of the multiple criteria for promotion to the next grade is 90% attendance and punctuality. It is the student’s responsibility to make up all assignments, projects and tests he/she misses during his/her absence.

ABSENCE

When the student is absent from school, the student’s parent must provide the teacher with a note explaining the absence. Parents are urged to have their children remain in school all day. Doctor or other appointments should be scheduled outside school hours and on school holidays, whenever possible. If a child needs to be dismissed early, he/she should bring a note to his/her teacher stating time and reason. Parents must sign the child out in the Main Office.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES

All students must follow the morning routines. Students may enter the building for breakfast through the 21st street entrance beginning at 7:35 a.m. All other children will enter at 8:00 a.m. There will be no supervision before that time. For your child’s safety, make every effort to adhere to the correct times of arrival. Parents should remain at the gates while students walk to the entrance door. Once children have entered the building, they will be supervised in their designated lineup area.

LATENESS

Children who arrive at school after 8:10 a.m are LATE.
Students who are late:
  • lose instructional time
  • disrupt the other students
  • may develop poor work habits
If a child is late:
  • parent/guardian explanatory note is required
  • he/she must report to the office upon entering the school to sign in so the appropriate changes are made

DISMISSAL TIME

Children in grades Pre-K-2 must be picked up by an adult. The teacher must have a written note from the parent as to who will pick the child up. Students in grades 3 and up, who are walkers, need to have written permission from a parent/guardian stating that they are allowed to do so. Please note: Older children will not be permitted to leave their classes to pick up younger siblings.

EVACUATION DRILLS

An evacuation drill is a very serious matter. When an evacuation drill takes place:

  1. Pay strict attention to the teacher in charge of your class.
  2. Move silently and quickly to the exit assigned to your room.
  3. If you are out of your classroom at the time of an evacuation drill, get in the back of the line of the nearest class.
  4. No talking or running is permitted during an evacuation drill.

LOCKDOWN DRILLS

A lockdown drill is also a serious matter. It is announced by loudspeaker. When a lockdown drill takes place all students must pay strict attention to the teacher in charge of your class.

NOTICES

Important notices are sent home on a regular basis with your child and by email. Please check the front clear pocket of your child’s planner daily. Each month you will receive a monthly calendar listing important events. A monthly lunch menu is printed on the reverse side.

BLACKBOARD CONNECT

From time to time, you may receive a telephone call to inform you about your child’s absence from school, scheduled school-wide events, or important information. Please notify the school if you change your telephone number.

CORRESPONDENCE REQUIRED FROM PARENT OR GUARDIAN

The school requires notes from parents or guardians for explanation of, or permission for, the following:

  • Absence
  • Lateness
  • Request for early dismissal (with name of adult who will be picking up)
  • In reply to notes from the teacher or principal
  • Field trips
  • Request to go home from school in a different manner from daily routine
  • Restricted Physical Education activities

GUIDELINES FOR APPROPRIATE DRESS

Parents should check their children before they leave for school to see if they are dressed appropriately.

  • During the cold months, children should be dressed warmly as coats may not be worn in class.
  • During the warm weather, light and loose clothing should be worn.
  • Sleeveless tops are acceptable. However, tank tops, midriff tops, spaghetti-strap tops, and strapless tops are unacceptable.
  • For safety, no open-toe sandals or backless shoes
  • Shorts, if worn, must be knee-length.
  • Hats and caps are encouraged for sun protection in the yard, but are not allowed to be worn in the building.
  • If your child is in an air-conditioned room, a light cover up is a good idea.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Established procedures for school closings and delayed openings are:

  • Parents/Guardians should listen to information broadcast by news radio stations such as WINS (1010 AM), WCBS (880 AM) or any NY television news stations. In general, you are listening for information regarding the New York City Department of Education.
  • The Chancellor’s decision to close or delay the opening of schools during stormy weather will be communicated to radio and television stations by 6:00 AM.
  • In the case of an announced two hour delayed school opening:
    - School will start at 10:10 a.m.
    - Children are to go to their designated bus stop two hours later than their regular time.
    - Regular dismissal times will be observed.
    - Listen to radio and television broadcasts for details
    - Regularly scheduled school buses will operate for school bus children
    - Make arrangements to pick up your child

If a storm intensifies during the school day, there may be an early dismissal.

EMERGENCY CARDS

The blue emergency Home Contact Card that your child brings home must be completed IMMEDIATELY with 3 different contact numbers. These cards are extremely crucial. Information on the emergency card is the school’s quick link to parents/guardians in case of a student illness, injury or other emergency. Please inform the school of any changes during the school year.

MEDIA CONSENT FORMS

In the beginning of the school year, your child will receive a form asking for you to consent to your child being photographed. It is very important that you return this form indicating whether or not you give permission for us to photograph your child.

ILLNESS OR INJURY AT SCHOOL

If a student is injured or becomes ill at school, he/she will be sent to the main office or nurse’s office. The nurse or office staff will try to contact the student’s parents. In the event parents cannot be reached, school staff will follow parents’ requests stated on the Emergency Card.

MEDICATION

A student may not bring medication of any kind, including non-prescriptions, to school. If it is necessary for a child to receive medication in school, the parent/guardian and the student’s physician must complete and sign the AUTHORIZATION TO ADMINISTER ORAL MEDICATION form for special Education students or the 504 FORM for general education students. Please contact the school nurse.
