The Academy for the Intellectually Gifted @ P.S. 122Q
Gifted Programs
The District 30 Intellectually Gifted Program at PS 122 has been created to meet the unique needs of community children who have met criteria of giftedness. These are children who are creative thinkers and problem solvers. They possess broad background knowledge, and they are inquisitive, perceptive and excited learners, and demonstrate commitment to performing at advanced levels academically and socially. Students must maintain eligibility requirements to remain in the program.
Admission Policy
The NYCDOE determines admission policy for all G&T programs. Seats in various G&T programs are offered by the DOE based on the results of standardized test scores, and additional criteria (to be determined by the DOE. click here).
MIddle School Academy
The program is departmentalized. Each subject teacher will assign homework, give tests and projects, and give a grade for each subject area.
The Academy for the Intellectually Gifted at P.S. 122 has always set high academic standards for its students. However, we also insist on placing a great deal of emphasis on enhancing the environment that has helped generations of students discover themselves. To that end we:
Use enrichment options to improve learning opportunities in and outside the school;
Create ample opportunities for self-exploration and the pursuit of personal interests;
Establish an environment where societal issues are discussed and personal responsibility cultivated;
Provide students with settings to ensure that they are exposed to intellectual, artistic, and creative peers;
Encourage involvement in a variety of activities that require the use of leadership skills.
At The Academy we support the social emotional development of your children. Here is a sample of some of the enriching experiences your children will enjoy:

What makes your middle-school gifted program different from others in the district? |
Our G&T program was the first ever in the district. Our school and its teachers have been teaching gifted students for more than 30 years. As a result, the unique needs of our student population are understood very well. The NAGC (National Association for Gifted Children) gifted standards served as our guidepost when creating the nurturing environment in which our students thrive. These standards continue to shape everything we do. |
How are students assessed at your school? |
Our educators use a variety of assessments in order to gather the best information possible about our students’ progress. These include pre- and post-assessments, performance-based and product-based tasks, as well as out-of-level assessments. Furthermore, our commitment to and use of project-based learning (PBL) experiences has increased with each passing year. |
How does your school help students develop a sense of self-understanding? |
We place a high-value in helping students identify their areas of interest, strengths, and talents. Among other strategies, we use learning style and interest surveys, and develop activities that match each student’s developmental level. |
