Ms. Blake: Instrumental and Band
Students in our band program can choose to learn how to play any of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, or percussion. The goal of our elementary music program is to enhance our students’ overall education, while instilling a lifelong love for music. Students in our Academy for the Intellectually Gifted and Talented experience a music education curriculum centered around comprehensive musicianship, real-life musical experiences, and exposure to different eras and styles of music. Students in the sixth grade participate in an intensive choral program experiencing vocal training techniques, aural training, and basic music theory. Opportunities for performance are also offered. Students in the seventh grade begin the year learning about American music history, before moving on to a highly-developed ukulele program. Students in the eighth grade start the year learning about western music history, before moving on to comprehensive musicianship, and songwriting. Our goal is to have students leave our school as well-developed musicians; able to participate in music, in their own ways, throughout the rest of their lives.
Ms. Robinson: Vocal and Chorus
The primary objective of our music program is to help build a lifelong love for music in our students. Most people are aware of the various studies that show engagement in music study and ensembles promotes mental development and provides an outlet for emotional expression. We aim to include musical activities in our curriculum which also enhance reasoning, inspire creativity, critical thinking, self-discipline, cooperation, problem-solving and imagination. Students in our Pre-K through 5 program learn many musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, and expressive elements. Students are encouraged to perform, create, evaluate, and respond to music in different settings. Our classrooms are stocked with grade-level appropriate instruments that students will use throughout their music education. Recorders are introduced to students in third grade and when students reach fourth grade, they are given the opportunity to join one of our two elementary performing ensembles; BAND or CHORUS. Students in chorus learn how to sing with proper vocal technique, and how to perform as a cohesive musical ensemble.
